The Mavericks

He wears a ten-gallon hat on his $4.00 per-gallon head,
and sports aviation glasses over his bushy eyebrows.
He wants to ride a mustang, but feral horses have issues
with cowboys and their domesticpolicy, preferring
true independence to unbridled secession.

She's a reformer without a reformation,
and her stilettos command attention like her hairstyle
demands product, demands a makeover
and a pledge to god that idols and icons
will not be from children made.
Together they don't look like Butch and Sundance,
But like a geriatric playboy with his trophy wife,
a comic ventriloquist and his female howdy doody,
an empty vessel and a man made of straw,
persevering the right to be non-conformist.

Professing faith in change without difference,
seeking a house for their homeless ambitions,
praying for rain on your Sunday picnic,
toasting your health and your family deficit,
rebels with conservative plans.
