Editor's Note: “Poison on the Platter”, is an eye-opening film, made by Mahesh Bhatt and Ajay Kanchan, illustrating how all of our lives are going to be (adversely) affected by genetically modified foods. It is no longer a farmer’s issue alone. It's a matter of the consumers’ right to food safety. For example, at the market, you and I are not be able to distinguish a normal eggplant (called "Brinjal" in the film) from one that has been genetically modified. The video points out that GM foods are being sold to people in the United States without informing them. It also points out that in India, packaged U.S. brand name products (e.g. corn chips) and foods in big fast food restaurants are being illegally imported into India. Corrupt regulatory bodies are turning a blind eye. The film challenges us to put up strong resistance, demanding a ban on GM food/crops for 5 years, until they are proven safe for human consumption by independent, long-term studies.
