US obstructing path of Geneva nuclear deal: Majlis Speaker

Iran Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani warns that obstructing the path of the nuclear deal reached between Tehran and the six major world powers in Geneva is not in the interest of the West.

Addressing reporters in the city of Qom on Sunday, Larijani added that the recent US move to impose new sanctions against Tehran has led to misunderstandings.

“Based on negotiations with the P5+1 -- including the US, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia -- it was agreed that the path of the agreement would be paved but the recent move [by the US] to impose new sanctions [against Iran] was contrary to this promise and…has created misunderstandings,” said the Iranian lawmaker.

“They [the US and West] reach an understanding in negotiations but in practice do not prepare the ground for the implementation of the agreements,” Larijani pointed out.

The administration of US President Barack Obama on Thursday issued new sanctions against more than a dozen companies and individuals for “providing support” for Tehran’s nuclear program.

The US Treasury Department said it was freezing assets and banning transactions of entities that had attempted to evade the sanctions against Iran.

The new US embargoes come despite the nuclear deal inked between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany in Geneva on November 24 in a bid to set the stage for the full resolution of the West’s decade-old dispute with Iran over the country’s nuclear energy program.

As part of the Geneva deal, it was agreed that no more sanctions would be imposed on Iran for six months.

On Sunday, Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the Islamic Republic would continue negotiations with the six major world powers but would respond prudently to any unconstructive and inappropriate action on the part of the Sextet.

“We will seriously pursue the Geneva talks, and we will of course give a proper, calculated, purposeful and smart response to any improper and unconstructive action,” Zarif added.
