Kiev launches air strikes in retaliation for down airplane

The Ukrainian military has launched air strikes against separatist strongholds in the eastern region. This follows the shooting down of a cargo plane that killed 49 people. The military targeted rebel checkpoints in Luhansk on Saturday in retaliation. They also targeted a military base that had been taken over by pro-Russian separatists. Earlier on Saturday, Ukrainian president Poroshenko consulted with his defence and security chiefs and then promised an "adequate response".

The plane was brought down by heavy calibre machine guns and anti-aircraft weapons, just as the plane was coming in for a landing. Debris was spread over several hundred metres of wheat fields near Novohannivka, a village 20km southeast of Luhansk. The tail section jutted up from the ground, with parts of the engines, fuselage and other parts lying around it. A platoon of rebel forces scoured the ruins for ammunition that had been intended for the government forces in east Ukraine.

In further news, there is more confirmation that Ukrainian forces have used, and continue to use, chemical weapons in the East. As reported here, there is evidence Kiev is using white phosphorous bombs.

There are at least two other confirmed instances of chemical warfare. The first was the unknown gas used against the House of Trade Unions in Odessa. There is video record of this event which includes witness statements from survivors. The second was the poison gas used in Slavyansk, as reported here.

It is also well known, although not reported by Western news sources, that the authorities in Kiev have launched a recruitment effort for chemists to work for the army, promising double income. This is an open, publicly disclosed fact.

Locals are pointing fingers at the West who are ultimately responsible for the events in Eastern Ukraine. It is the West that provoked the uprising in February, it is the West who arranged to install an oligarchic stooge as president, it is the West who is pulling his strings.
