Appearing to backtrack on an earlier suggestion, Swedish officials have refused to take up Ecuador's offer of questioning Julian Assange in London.
Sweden’s chief prosecutor Marianne Ny has ruled out questioning Assange in London ahead of a court ruling in Sweden on whether to lift the warrant for his arrest, she stated on Wednesday.

This comes despite suggesting earlier this week that she was considering taking advantage of the offer made by Ecuador to facilitate the interview at its London embassy.

“With regards to the possibility of a hearing in London, I’ve made my position clear and I have nothing more to add,” said Ny on Wednesday.

The British government had also said it would facilitate such an offer.

After receiving political asylum from Ecuador in 2012, the Wikileaks founder has lived in that country’s embassy in London.

Since 2010, prosecutors have sought to question Assange in Sweden about allegations of rape and sexual molestation, although he has not been charged with any of those offenses.

A European arrest warrant prevents him from leaving the Ecuadorian embassy.

Assange has refused to travel to Sweden for fear that he will be extradited to the United States for publishing military secrets if he does so.

Ecuador granted the Wikileaks founder asylum after considering the threat of him being extradited to the USA and facing treatment similar to Chelsea Manning.

However the Ecuadorian government has always said that the Swedish prosecutor can question Assange in its Embassy.
