Israel has been accused of committing war crimes in its latest assault on Gaza.

On Monday, the United Nations (U.N.) named the head of an international investigation into allegations of war crimes during Israel's attack on Gaza earlier this year.

“The Secretary-General has established an internal and independent United Nations Headquarters Board of Inquiry into certain incidents that occurred in the Gaza Strip between July 8 and August 26 2014. The board will be led by Mr. Patrick Cammaert,” U.N. spokesperson Farhan Haq said.

Cammaert is a retired Dutch general who formerly headed peacekeeping forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

According to Haq, the board will “review and investigate a number of specific incidents in which death or injuries occurred at, and/or damage was done to United Nations premises.”

“The board will also review and investigate incidents in which weapons were found to be present on United Nations premises,” he stated.

Hamas has long called for an investigation into allegations of war crimes against both itself and Israeli forces. However, Israeli ambassador to the U.N. Ron Prosser, told reporters Tel Aviv has not decided whether to support the board.

“We are now assessing. We heard the announcement and I'll be back before you, giving you a complete rundown on how we see things,” Prosser stated.

Human rights groups have accused Israeli forces of indiscriminately killing civilians and targeting schools and hospitals, as well as bombing U.N. facilities.

More than 2000 Gazans were killed during Israel's offensive – most of whom were civilians.

Six civilians on the Israeli side also died. Last week the top prosecutor for the International Criminal Court said Israel also committed war crimes in 2010.
