The Venezuelan president and foreign minister both came out strongly Monday against interventionist plans and media campaigns designed to paint the country as a failed state.

“All imperialist wars have been precipitated by media campaigns such as this one, giving false information that wishes to provide the world with the justification for an intervention,” said Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez in an interview with Venezuelan channel, Venevision.

There has been increase in negative media coverage of Venezuela recently, in what Eva Golinger called, in a widely published opinion piece, a “coordinated media campaign.”

Rodriguez stated that her government will make formal complaints regarding these plots to international diplomatic and legal bodies. She highlighted the fact that during the CELAC summit, held recently in Costa Rica, the member countries unanimously rejected the interference of the United States in the internal affairs of Venezuela.

CELAC is a regional body representing the countries of the Americas with the notable exception of the U.S. and Canada. It emphasizes regional integration and unity of member states. Rodriguez stated that Latin America would respond to foreign interference as a united bloc.

CELAC also expressed concern over the decision of U.S. lawmakers to apply sanctions against Venezuela. The United States on Monday imposed visa restrictions on unnamed current and former Venezuelan officials alongside the release of a provocative statement from the U.S. State Department.

In a televised speech Monday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro repeated his denunciation of U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden and his alleged plot to oust his democratically-elected government in a coup.
