Hundreds of people protested at the Red Cross headquarters in Gaza Monday to demand the release of Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails.
Organized by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), demonstrators highlighted the case of Khaled al-Sheikh, a 14-year-old Palestinian boy who has been imprisoned since Dec. 25 for allegedly “throwing stones.”
The teen was arrested by Israeli soldiers in Beit Anan village in the Jerusalem District of Al-Quds along with 14-year-old Malaak al-Khatib, who was released Sunday after being sentenced to two months in prison. The girls parents were also fined US$ 1,500.
Khaled's parents said their child suffers from several health issues, including anemia, and say Israeli authorities have refused to provide essential medical treatments to him.
According to figures provided by human rights organizations, between 150 and 200 Palestinian child prisoners are currently among the over 7,000 Palestinians being held in 17 Israeli prisons and detention camps. Groups also say that 540 Palestinians are being held without charge or trial.
