A man who took part in the horrific gang rape and murder of a woman on a bus in Delhi, India, said that “girls are far more responsible for rape” than men.

Bus driver Mukesh Singh participated in the brutal attack Dec. 16, 2012, on his passenger, 23-year-old physiotherapy student Jyoti (Flame), who was riding the bus at night accompanied by a male friend. Singh was one of a group of men that abused Jyoti with a metal pole. She died from her injuries two weeks later and her death sparked a wave of revulsion and protests across the world, demanding that violence against women in India be confronted.

In an interview with the BBC from prison revealing the revolting attitudes in India towards women,  explained why he thought the victim was to blame.

“A decent girl won't roam around at nine o'clock at night,” he said.

“A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy. Boys and girls are not equal. Housework and housekeeping is for girls, not roaming in discos and bars at night doing wrong things, wearing wrong clothes."

“About 20 percent of girls are good,” he told the BBC.

The bus driver sent a spine chilling warning that he believed his execution would further endanger women.

“Now when they rape, they won't leave the girl like we did - they will kill her,” he said.

“Before, they would rape and say, ‘Leave her, she won't tell anyone.’ Now when they rape, especially the criminal types, they will just kill the girl.”

According to official national statistics, 93 women are raped every day in India. The number rose by some 10,000 in 2013 to 33,707.
