Millions of households in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia, can now watch teleSUR 24 hours a day, seven days a week starting Wednesday. MHz Networks began broadcasting teleSUR digitally from its towers in Northern Virginia at 10 am EST March 25.

Reaching 2.3 households in the area, and considering the population of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, that translates into 5 million Americans who can now access teleSUR’s content in Spanish from the comfort of their homes.

teleSUR joins RT, CCTV, France 24 and other international news networks offered by MHz Networks.

Unlike other broadcasters, MHz Networks has expanded its foreign news coverage over the past twenty years, a move that CEO Frederick Thomas says helps Americans understand and get to know the diversity of Latin America and other parts of the world.

“The way you get at any truth is to have much more information. That’s the way you get at truth. It’s not by having only one [source of information]. It’s a simple concept. With teleSUR in particular, because of the region it carries, I think there’s going to be a lot of upside to it,” said Thomas.

Thomas believes that airing teleSUR in Washington, D.C. and the surrounding communities will allow the network to connect with and receive feedback on its content from American viewers themselves. That’s a goal that teleSUR’s Washington, D.C. Bureau Chief Nicolás Peña is aiming for.

According to Peña, today’s launch of 24-hour teleSUR coverage in the nation’s capital is the first step towards the debut of teleSUR English in the United States, which is expected to come later this year.

“For teleSUR it’s important that the Spanish-speaking audience has access to our content from within the United States so that they’re informed and they understand the realities and changes that continue to develop in their home countries, but from a channel that tells stories from a perspective of integration, ethics, and social responsibility,” said Peña.

teleSUR aired in the tri-state DC-MD-VA area for three months beginning last year as part of an initial trial period. Now that stage is complete. Thomas says providing teleSUR content that U.S. viewers can access from the comfort of their own homes will give the network some much-needed exposure.

“It’s very important to get a different perspective. It makes you smarter, as a populace it makes us smarter, and in turn we can encourage our decision-makers to be smarter,” said Thomas.
