A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on April 25, causing at least 800 deaths (so far) as well as more deaths in neighbouring countries. Mt Everest, in nearby Tibet, was also shaken, leading to at least one avalanche that turned deadly.

The scale of damage is immense, leading officials in Nepal to call for international assistance. This is a poor country and officials here recognize that there is international expertise with far more experience in disasters of this kind. The immediate request was for technical help, but there is no doubt there will be a need for medical, water, and food assistance very quickly.

This story is sure to develop over the next hours or days, so at this point we are simply posting some of the photographs available from multiple online sources.
