It was announced on Wednesday that Operation Hydrant, led by the National Police Chief's Council,is investigating more than 1,400 suspects as part of a historical child sex abuse inquiry.

It was revealed 261 of these are “people of public prominence,” with 135 coming from TV, film or radio. Of the 1,433 suspects, 216 are now dead.

The operation, set up in 2014, is dealing with claims relating to institutions such as schools, children's homes, religious organizations and military establishments.

Norfolk Police Chief Constable Simon Bailey said the complaints were increasing “on an almost daily basis.”

“We are seeing an unprecedented increase in the number of reports that are coming forward.”

According to Bailey, reports have increased by 71 percent since 2012 to 116,000 reports this year. The official said this wasn't just down to more people coming forward, but that sexual predators now had more opportunities to perpetuate abuse with the internet and live-streaming technologies.

Bailey also called for more support for victims, and said the millions allocated by the government might not be enough.

One of the main challenges identified by Operation Hydrant consists in creating a database of information for all police forces to have access to. During the investigation into Jimmy Savile, it emerged information and reports of abuse had been buried in the system, preventing police forces to join the dots.

“One of our primary objectives is to make sure where we get intelligence and where we get evidence of abuse it is being coordinated so we don’t make those mistakes. That particular case showed mistakes were made and he was able to go on and continue further abusing. The whole idea is that we don’t make those mistakes again,” Bailey said.
