A Saudi woman who posted a video online of her husband cheating on her with a maid could be put behind bars, news reports said Tuesday.
The woman posted the video on her social media accounts along with the caption: “the minimum punishment for this husband is to scandalize him.” She secretly filmed the video, which shows her husband talking to the maid and then kissing her.
Tweet: “It is funny that we see people defending his infidelity while attacking the woman for publishing the clip!!”
The video went viral in Saudi Arabia, with the majority of people seemingly in support of the woman. However, some also called for her arrest, saying her decision to publish the video went against “Islamic values.” A local newspaper quoted well known Saudi lawyer Majid Qaroob as saying the woman could be jailed for up to one year on defamation charges.
“She faces up to one year in prison or a fine of SR500,000 (US$136,000) for defaming her husband in line with the law on information technology crimes,” Qaroob told the newspaper. “This law includes stiff punishment for anyone using mobile phones with a camera or other equipment to photograph others and defame them,” he said.
On Monday, The hashtag, #SaudiWomanCatchesHusbandCheating, received more than 25,000 mentions on social media in less than 12 hours.
After the news surfaced that she could face jail time or a fine, another hashtag, #WeAreAllLatifaAlRajihi, popped up on Twitter, with many offering her support.
“I salute you warmly for your valiant courage,” Al Yamama, a blogger, said of the woman’s decision, according to Gulf News. “You did the best thing because there was an urgent need for revenge and your revenge is the best."
