The successful operation against terrorists in Syria by the Russian Aerospace Forces continues to attract much attention.

It seems, however, that these actions are still being used by some as another opportunity to spread anti-Russian propaganda, myths and even deliberate lies.

Recently, among the most prevalent have been unfounded accusations alleging that the Russian military aim at civilian targets and are responsible for “deaths of thousands of civilians”.

Yet, since the beginning of the operation and to this day no evidence has been submitted to support these claims.

I remember that when I worked with the Soviet delegation at the USSR-US Strategic Arms Limitation Talks in 1975 (!) national technical means of both countries (satellites) allowed to take clear pictures of cars’ number plates.

So one can imagine how technology has advanced since that time, allowing to easily detect almost anything anywhere on the Earth’s surface (including cars, tanks, troops, civilian objects and so on).

Moreover, as has been repeatedly stated by the Russian Ministry of Defence, each and every target in Syria is double-checked and then again rechecked though various channels to exclude any threat to the lives of civilians.

Many Western media outlets seem to be frequently relying on one information source for facts about the death toll in Syria – the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which, as has been revealed, is run by a Syrian immigrant from his UK home. This person, who is reported to have served several prison terms in Syria and has not visited the country for 15 years, is collecting unconfirmed facts and rumours from unnamed ‘trusted sources’, which are then presented as the ultimate truth.

As for the absurd claims portraying Russia as the main culprit behind the unfolding refugee crisis in Europe, it is absolutely obvious that this problem developed long before the Russian Aerospace Forces started delivering airstrikes on terrorists in Syria in September 2015 upon the request of the legitimate Syrian government.

Rather, the migration crisis was provoked by the illegal NATO operation against Libya and subsequent actions, which led to the collapse of other regional countries and the increased number of refugees. This March will mark five years since the beginning of the Syrian conflict. Russia’s main goals remain unchanged – to eliminate Isis and to see peace as well as a political process in Syria managed by Syrians themselves, who will have to determine their own future at free and fair elections under UN supervision.

We are convinced that the settlement in Syria will have a positive effect not only on its immediate neighbours but also on the north of Africa, where the threat of terrorism and extremism today is very real.

We believe that this can only be achieved through the joint effort of the international community. And it is high time this was done.
