Let us ponder the bookends of the WaPo story, "Trump attacks U.S. foreign policy, political press corps on state-owned Russian television network."

The lede:
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump criticized U.S. foreign policy and the American political press corps Thursday during an interview on RT America, a state-owned Russian television network.
The conclusion:
The Trump campaign played down the interview Thursday evening, explaining that they did not realize it would be broadcast on RT.
Yes of course, what a shock it must have been to the Trump campaign that an RT interview would air on RT.

Let us also ponder the fate of Barack Obama in 2008 had he appeared with Walter Xing Cronkite on Chinese Central Television, blasting sitting-president George W. Bush's foreign policy failures; denying that Chinese cyberwarfare was being nefariously directed at the United States and that, only out of partisan malice, only Republicans were "putting that out"; and alleging that virtually all American media — unlike, one presumes, Chinese Central Television — was imbued with "tremendous dishonesty."

Candidate Obama would have been lucky to carry Illinois or Hawaii. Democrats would have scurried in associational terror as Republicans not unjustifiably shrieked Nincompoop! and America-loathing Slanderer! and of course Traitor!

For Mr. Trump? His will be but a 24-hour story, since any minute now he'll say or do something even dumber. And so he stays ahead of the American electorate's pointed pondering; there just isn't enough time for any one Trumpian fatuity to really soak in. And so his is also the first American presidential campaign based almost exclusively on the innovative theory that there exists no mountain of offensive bullshit that cannot be topped — thus somehow bewildering the electorate into OK-you-win submission?
