A leak about leaking is leaked Printer friendly page Print This

Sean Spicer is carrying out President Trump’s bidding to silence leakers by seizing staffers’ phones and seeing who they’ve been talking to.

According to Politico, Spicer became incensed at White House communications staffers when details of a private conversation were leaked to the media in stories critical of the Trump administration. The following day, he ordered all communications staffers to dump their phones on the table prior to a meeting where White House lawyers were present, and told staff that any use of encrypted messaging systems was prohibited under the Federal Records Act.

Part of the bureaucratic resistance to the Trump regime involves surreptitious means of communication with outside sympathizers and the media, including everything from alternate email addresses to encryption software for text and email. Leakers are using WhatsApp and Signal to reduce the chance of their communications being seen by higher-ups in the administration.

“I have no idea where this is going to go. I think we’re all just taking it one day at a time and respond in a way that seems appropriate and right,” one anonymous EPA staffer told Politico.

Ironically, the details of that meeting were apparently leaked to Politico by as-yet-unidentified “sources in the room,” and Spicer told attendees of the meeting that if the details of the “phone check” were leaked to the press, there would be hell to pay.
