More superficial reporting on Venezuela from the BBC Printer friendly page Print This

Greetings from the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Your current Caracas correspondent, Kety Watson, really makes a fool of herself in this report. She states a truth:
"..... even though pre-election polls had predicted that the majority of states would go to them."
Well, the polls she mentions, all paid for by the opposition were totally wrong and no hard evidence has been produced to demonstrate fraud.

Then three lines later Katy states:
"Mr Maduro's approval ratings may only be a little over 20%.........."
For your information this 20% approval rating comes from precisely the same pollsters that forecast a landslide for the opposition in the regional elections - and got it totally inverted.

The government party received over 54% of the vote compared to about 45% for the opposition and this tallies more accurately with independent pollsters such as Hinterlaces that placed Maduro's approval rating at 59%.

Why does well-read-Katy not mention this fact? Because it would undermine the whole basis of her reporting.

I recommend that Katy listens to Venezuelan National Radio (91.1 FM in Caracas) and she might get her facts straight and do some unbiased reporting for a change instead of the almost pathological implicit criticism of Maduro and his government every time she touches her computer keyboard.

In 10 December there are mayoral elections and a landslide is expected for the government. Currently the government holds 75% of all mayoralties out of the 335 in the country and this could rise to almost 90% this time as part of the opposition is refusing to participate.

I look forward to Katy reporting on this probable debacle for the opposition on the BBC web site.
