Tory Hell: Austerity Weapon of Mass Destruction Kills 150,000 Brits

Multibillionaire investor Warren Buffett famously warned that derivatives are “financial weapons of mass destruction.” This was before the crash of ’08. Buffett also boasts that “my class is winning,” in what he called “class war.” After the crash, with 4 million homes in the US alone foreclosed, Buffett reaffirmed the class war.

But there’s another economic weapon of mass destruction: austerity. Big business lobbies for austerity because it doesn’t want be taxed. It’s easier for governments to crush and even kill off the poor with cuts to social security and the National Health Service than it is to extract money from their primary constituents.

Recently, ten medical experts from institutions, ranging from King’s College London to Oxford University, published a time trend analysis of Tory cuts to social spending, particularly in the elder care sector. “From 2001 to 2010, the absolute number of deaths in England decreased by an average of 0.77% per year. From 2011 to 2014, the number of deaths increased by an average of 0.87% per year.” Between 2010 and 2014, an estimated 45,368 excess deaths occurred as a result of the cuts. And that’s not even the whole of the UK.

The authors conclude that between 2009 and 2020, more than 150,000 people, mostly elderly, have died and will die, as a result of ongoing austerity, many due to nursing shortages. No one really knows, but this is roughly the number of Japanese people in Hiroshima alone who perished in the atomic test in 1945—discounting those who died from complications caused by the radiation and blast.

But old people are the Tories’ biggest voting demographic, so if they want to keep winning elections they’d better stop killing off their voter base.
