Lawmaker Elizabeth Cabezas was elected as the new President of the National Assembly of Ecuador after Jose Serrano was dismissed over a corruption scandal. With 84 votes in favor, 2 against and 21 abstentions, Ecuador's National Assembly elected its new head on Wednesday. Second Vice President Carlos Bergmann formally declared Elizabeth Cabezas as the new president following the dismissal of Jose Serrano, which took place last week.

Fernando Burbano, an independent lawmaker at the assembly, suggested the Alianza PAIS member Cabezas as a candidate, saying Ecuador needs to go beyond “party interests” because the assembly is “on probation by all Ecuadoreans.”

The new president was elected amid protest from the Alfarista Revolution (RA) lawmakers, who claimed that vote for a new assembly president is unconstitutional.

Luis Molina, from the RA, demanded to include a discussion regarding the election's constitutionality in the agenda, arguing that in case the president is temporarily or permanently missing, the vice president should replace her or him.

Molina said that the assembly wanted to “go back to the 90s” and asked his fellow lawmakers to act according to their principles and not to interpret the constitution.

But the assembly voted against the discussion motion, which caused the RA lawmakers to leave the session with copies of Ecuador's constitution in hand.

Serrano's dismissal follows several allegations of conspiracy after prosecutor Carlos Bacca released an audio recording of a conversation between Serrano and former Auditor General Carlos Polit, a fugitive who is currently being investigated for corruption.

The former president said he only spoke to Polit to obtain information related to corruption cases. However, Serrano had previously pushed for former Vice President Jorge Glas' impeachment in connection with the Odebrecht corruption scandal.
