U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday there's a "substantial chance" the summit between him and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will not take place as planned.

"There's a very substantial chance... it won't work out – and that's OK," Trump told reporters. "That doesn’t mean it won't work out over a period of time, but it may not work out for June 12. But there is a good chance that we'll have the meeting."

The talks are currently scheduled for June 12 in Singapore. Trump, however, had second thoughts after North Korea decided to pull back from several of its own high-level talks with South Korea.

The North Korean leadership said that U.S. military exercises and references by U.S. officials to following a 'Libya model' of denuclearization were too threatening.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in traveled to Washington on Tuesday to urge Trump not to let the opportunity for talks with Kim slip away.

Trump has kept his options open, saying whether the meeting will be held as scheduled will be determined "pretty soon... North Korea has a chance to be a great country and I think they should seize the opportunity."

Planning for the talks advanced after a successful summit between North and South Korea, which resulted in a committeemen to work toward peace and denuclearization.

Kim has also held two meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping in recent months, and the ruling Workers' Party of Korea has released plans to commit to a path of economic development and the growth of positive international relations.

Despite good faith negotiations by Korean leaders in the North and South, U.S. officials have expressed feelings that Moon is "overstating" Kim's willingness to work toward denuclearization.
