Was China’s Wanxiang Venture in North Korea Behind Trump’s Salvaged Meeting With Kim Jong Un? Printer friendly page Print This

The fact that the Chinese based Wanxiang corporation has been doing business in North Korea for quite some time is no secret among officials in Washington. Neither is its joint venture with a North Korean copper mine in the country’s desolate Ryanggang Province; or its involvement in Development Trading Corporation (KOMID) which, according to the U.S. Treasury Department, is North Korea’s primary arms dealer and main exporter of goods and equipment related to ballistic missiles and conventional weapons.(1)

Given that Wanxiang lobbyists were recently seen with President Donald Trump and several family members, some now suspect that Wanxiang was behind President Donald Trump’s sudden change of attitude towards a historical summit meeting with Kim Jong Un. They also think it’s the reason he tweeted: “I truly believe North Korea has brilliant potential and will be a great economic and financial Nation one day,” adding that “If North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un agrees with me on this. It will happen!”

Wanxiang’s Political Web
Wanxiang, which has close ties to China’s ruling party, actually started to develop powerful political friends in Washington back in 1999 with George W. Bush. Not only did Wanxiang sign up his uncle Prescott Bush as a paid adviser to the company, but once President Bush moved to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Uncle Prescott stayed on the payroll.(2) In the meantime, Wanxiang’s footprint continued to expand among corporate America with real estate adventures, energy companies, and technologies.

The same occurred when Barack Obama became president in January 2009. Having established an American headquarters in Chicago, Wanxiang benefited from many of his Chicago colleagues and friends. This included Richard M. Daley, who was also added to Wanxiang’s payroll, his brother Bill Daley who served in Obama’s White House as Chief of Staff, and First Lady Michelle Obama. Even none other than Vice President Joe Biden invited Wanxiang to Washington to “explore investment opportunities.”(3)

Wanxiang’s Military Web
Of interest too is how Wanxiang’s subsidiaries which produced solar energy received stimulus monies from the Obama Administration. In 2012, the $5 billion company moreover saved a Massachusetts based company called A123 from bankruptcy. What made this all the more alarming is that A123 possessed industry-leading technologies for advanced military systems including satellites. Some now think the same technology was not only used for China’s growing military but shared with North Korea.(4)

Fast-forward to Wanxiang’s lobbying efforts with the president, his family, and the Trump Organization, and it doesn’t take a stretch of the imagination to suspect the corporate giant may have been behind the historical summit in Singapore. Along with the president and his family benefiting from Wnxiang’s Hyesan Youth Copper Mine or its Ministry of Mining Industries of North Korea, there are many other untapped resources and billion dollar ventures to be had in developing North Korea.

Wanxiang and Trump’s Web of Entanglement
This week when the president’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, announced that Kim Jong Un “got on his hands and knees and begged” for a summit to be held after it was canceled, just the opposite may have in fact occurred. But instead of Donald Trump begging North Korea for a summit it was Wanxiang.(5) To be sure, some have already noted how Donald Trump only thinks about himself and amassing wealth for his business empire. Wanxiang would indeed provide funds hard to track and rewards enormous for his family.

Don’t be surprised, either, if the president suddenly begins to defend doing business in North Korea on the grounds that the country will become more liberal as a result of its interaction with the U.S. To be sure, and since funds are always hard to track and rewards are enormous for family members, it’s easy to understand why someone like Donald Trump would want to continue to build his secret empire of wealth. American laws and sanctions will more than likely also be bent to suit the needs of foreign entities.
