Dance me to the end of love Printer friendly page Print This
By Leonard Cohen & Natasha Rostova

This is from the Russian movie 'War and Peace', which is much better than the dreadful 1956 Hollywood version with Henry Fonda - not even the beautiful Audrey Hepburn could redeem that movie. I have only seen the Russian version whilst in the former USSR and with no translation I struggled - but my modicum of Russian skills coupled with an intimate knowledge of the novel got me through.

The scene in this video is filmed in the Grand Ballroom of Catherine the Great's Winter Palace in St Petersburg. I can assure you it is far more stunning in person - the film can't really capture the magnificence of the structure and the sheer obscenity of royalty.

This dance is the first public appearance of Countess Natasha Rostova - her first ball - and the song choice here is wholly inappropriate. This is meant to be a beautiful evening for Natasha, her coming out into society, but the song is actually about the horrors of World War II and concentration camps.

Nonetheless, the scene is beautiful, Natasha is beautiful and one NEVER needs an excuse to listen to Leonard Cohen's music.
