Israeli security forces shot dead two Palestinians in clashes along the Gaza border on Tuesday evening, the health ministry in the Palestinian enclave said.

The two men, who were not immediately identified, were killed during fresh protests near the Erez checkpoint between Gaza and Israel, the scene of regular confrontation between Palestinian youths and Israeli soldiers in recent months.

Hundreds of Palestinians approached the border crossing shortly before sunset on Tuesday when the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur was set to begin. The protests are part of months of demonstrations against Israel's decade-long blockade of the enclave.

The Erez checkpoint was closed for a week this month after a similar protest damaged the crossing.

Separately, two Palestinians were killed in an Israeli airstrike late Monday night after planting a suspicious device on the border, the Israeli army said.

In Jerusalem's Old City, a Palestinian man was also shot by Israeli police who claimed he tried to stab a Jewish worshiper near Damascus Gate outside the walled Old City on Yom Kippur, the holiest fast day in the Jewish calendar.

Police sealed off a street in which a body lay on the ground covered with a sheet.

The police spokesman claimed the assailant was a 26-year-old Palestinian from Qalandia in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, and that his presence in Jerusalem was illegal due to an entry ban on Palestinians during the Jewish High Holy Days.

However, Palestinian witnesses said they saw a young man fleeing, pursued by police who opened fire.
