Housing Project Planned for Nicaraguans Earning Under US$400

The administration of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega announced a new affordable housing project aimed at low-income families.

The Bismarck Martinez Program for a Safe and Dignified Home will help families who earn less than US$400 monthly - which falls into the low-purchasing power group - to access the social service at low costs.

The Managua leg of the project has already attracted over 900 applications, Rosario Murillo, Vice President, said. In the first stage of the project, 50 lots will be made available.

"We are going to advance to the second stage, we will start the urbanization works immediately to enable another 100 lots of land and then next week, Dios Mediante, we will be presenting the location of the third stage with 600 lots of additional land,” Murillo added.

Some 900,000 units will be made available to reduce the current housing deficit, according to the Chamber of Urban Developers of Nicaragua. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) recommends that in order to reduce the housing deficit it must build at least 20,000 houses per year.

Beneficiaries - who are all required to prove and have overcrowded living circumstance authenticated - will pay US$20 each month for six years.

The Ortega Government will implement the program throughout 134 of the 153 municipalities in Nicaragua.

"This national program is going to be replicated in the 134 municipal mayors where the Sandinista Front governs. The mayors of the FSLN will identify the land to initiate the dissemination and registration to participate in the Bismarck Martinez National Program, also in the 134 municipalities of the country, where we are working for the common good and for all,” Murillo explained.
