Brexit: See, It Was OK After All… Printer friendly page Print This

For the last two years, the people of the UK, and the 3 million or so EU citizens living and working there, have heard via the media that “time’s running out” on the UK-EU Brexit “negotiations” (read: undemocratic farce in which political representatives of both Leave and Remain were excluded from formulating and participating in negotiations with the unelected EU bureaucrats).

The UK media narrative has been one of a dysfunctional and incompetent British government bungling through negotiations and jeopardising the future of the UK. This fits the usual propaganda that, instead of being run by a secretive, calculating group of psychopaths and sociopaths (whoever they may be at any given time), “democracies” are run by a bunch of well-meaning or not-so-well-meaning idiots.

It’s a propaganda trick that seems to work: the “incompetent” Tony Blair, who just happened to make a literal and figurative killing from politics; the bankers who were too “stupid” to notic
e the bubble that burst in 2007-08, and who just so happened to get even richer as a result of the collapse; the “foolish” PM May who miraculously brokered an eleventh-hour deal; and so on.

The outcome of the Brexit “negotiations” appears to have been planned all along. This we can ascertain from the sudden “deal” that now appears to have been struck, with only hours to go before the clock ran out. The “deal,” which at the time of writing still hasn’t been made public (even to many MPs it would seem, such is the “will of the people,”) appears to be roughly in line with the Brexit White Paper that envisaged staying in the Customs Union.

The nation woke to the news that the hated Mrs. May was neither so bad nor so incompetent after all. So, the crippling uncertainty over the pound and import-export restrictions was all for nothing: as was the use of EU citizens resident in the UK as “main cards” in the Brexit game (Trade Sec. and war criminal Liam Fox).

The only truth in the whole fiasco is that May’s “deal” (read: elitist carve up) will anger the hard-line Brexit faction (read: “free market” fanatics) represented by Jacob Rees-Mogg and the like; those who want an ultra-neoliberal Brexit as opposed to the standard neoliberalism (which is bad enough) that comes with EU membership. (Not that Britain needed the EU to impose neoliberal hegemony over its long-suffering public, giving its record number of opt-outs from EU legislation. Leavers didn’t seem to notice).

Will Rees-Mogg et al. vote against May’s “deal”? Tory party whips are good at digging up dirt on their MPs and blackmailing them into voting however they see fit. So, it’s unlikely that there will be enough MPs in the end to block May in the British Parliament and collapse her wretched government. But, it might happen.

The only hope for financially struggling Britons and EU citizens in the UK alike, is that if and when the “final deal” (whatever that’s supposed to mean and whenever it will supposedly take place) goes to Parliament, enough opposition from unblackmailable hardliners will force a vote of no confidence in the PM and trigger a general election. (Fat chance, as the media have also been rumour-mongering about a leadership challenge/second snap election since 2017).

This could lead the way for a Corbyn (read: ordinary working people’s) Labour government. Not that that would make much difference to Brexit (Corbyn being a closet or not-so-closet Leaver), but at least the people of the UK would have some tangible hope of ending austerity and starting some national investments. A comparatively humane Labour government would also guarantee rights for EU citizens already present in the UK.

However, with half the Labour Party angling to get rid of Corbyn at any opportunity, and with the majority of Tories and Labour MPs supporting the relatively “soft Brexit” that May (read: her negotiators) seems to have worked out, it’s all a dream for now.
