Ecuador asks OAS to probe Colombian rebel files
June 1, 2008

MEDELLIN, Colombia, June 1 (Reuters) - Ecuador on Sunday asked the Organization of American States to investigate claims by neighboring Colombia that linked Ecuador to left-wing rebels branded terrorists by Washington.

Ecuador denies the claims and asked the OAS to clarify the situation, which has increased tensions between the two countries since a Colombian military raid on Ecuador's side of the border in March killed top Colombian rebel Raul Reyes.

"Ecuador is officially asking the secretary-general of the OAS to launch an investigation," Ecuadorean Foreign Minister Maria Isabel Salvador told reporters on the sidelines of an OAS meeting in Medellin, Colombia.

Colombian and U.S. officials say files found on Reyes' computer indicate Venezuela's President Hugh Chavez and Ecuadorean leader Rafael Correa provided financial support or backing to the rebels. Both leaders deny those charges.

OAS chief Jose Miguel Insulza has said he is willing to look into the matter if a member country requests an investigation.

Interpol last month said its forensic tests showed the authenticity of the files but the international police agency could not vouch for the veracity of the contents of the computers found at Reyes' camp inside Ecuador.

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe is Washington's closest ally in the region while Correa and Chavez are fierce critics of the White House.

We are The Laptop Investigation We’ve been Waiting For

Andres Oppenheimer’s dumb prayers are about to be answered—to great comic effect! The narcissist-retardist Miami Herald gasbag has been demanding that the Organization of American States investigate the files from the FARC’s magical jungle laptops that ostensibly link Venezuela and Ecuador to armed rebels, in order to “punish” the two countries. Problem is, the Colombians refuse to ask for an independent investigation, which may have something to do with the fact that they’ve recently been caught creating fake laptop-related evidence for select media outlets.

But never fear, because over the weekend the OAS finally received a petition to fully investigate all the allegations—from Ecuador. And now justice will be served and/or Colombia will have to lose those laptops, too.

Ecuador confuses the world

C'mon, Homer...think...think!!

Now, if what we're told by the English-speaking press is true, then Colombia is the country trying to be honest and open about this FARC laptop thingy, and Ecuador is trying to hide behind a wall of denial.

If that's so, then why does Ecuador want the international community to fully examine the contents of the laptop, while Colombia has been so reticent in handing them over to a neutral third party? If you're confused, trying considering that what you've been told so far by Fox News and the Miami Herald ain't necessarily so, Joe.

Hat tip to Borev for getting this story out there and making it more interesting than I can manage.

UPDATE 6PM: It didn't take long for Colombians loyal to Presdent Uribe to add their dos centavos worth to the debate. No, not the Colombian gov't, we're talking about Uribe ultra-loyalist attorney Abelardo de la Espriella, who has demanded that President Correa be tried by the International Penal Court. In the words of this joker. he wants to bang up Correa and...

"....those functionaries that have been found by the (FARC) computers to have participated in the events investigated.........all this is with fundamental proof in the information found in those computers that have already been ratified by Interpol."

Y'see, all this bullshit talk goes down really well for its target audience in Colombia, allowing the gov't ample room to avoid explaining to its people why it has been so reluctant to call an independent investigation into the contents of the FARC hardware. The Uribe lawyer also once again fudges the facts and implies that Interpol investigated the contents of the 6.1 gigabytes of files found on the computers. It didn't. All Interpol did was say that they couldn't totally vouch for the integrity of the files. Don't believe me? Well read the report, not some ass who reports what you want to read about the report.
