Our television screens were filled with rejoicing crowds in Madrid after their national team had won the European Football Cup 2008, and we can all understand their happiness. For those in the rare parts of the world where association football (also known as 'soccer') is not part of the national sporting life, it has to be explained that this is the European equivalent of the Coppa America in America and the African Cup in Africa.
At the same time, and by some sort of crazy coincidence, the sinister rulers of the big petroleum giants are gathering (also in Madrid) to carve up Iraq's oil reserves. As commentators have already remarked, this is a clear indication of the real reason why Mr Bush's 'Coalition' invaded Iraq. As the same reporters also confirm to us, the Companies concerned are exactly those which had previously seized hold of the Iraqi oil industry, before it was finally nationalised by their constant enemy, Saddam Hussein Takriti.
This carve up has, of course, no basis in law whatsoever, and we can assume that the USA (under whichever puppet wins in November) will continue the occupation, regardless of any pre-election promises which may have been made, thus exacerbating the strains already existing in international relations.
We can be sure that their joy will be more discreet than that of the crowds outside, who are due to welcome their victorious team home this (Monday) afternoon, but they must surely feel that they have now put the 'terrifying' nationalisation interlude behind them with the backing of the most aggressive, but not the strongest, super power in the world. They can now look ahead happily to making indecent profits at the expense of the people of Iraq, whose lives have been ruined on their behalf under the evil leadership of the Bush régime.
