Rough Justice

As a lawyer I was startled this morning to hear on BBC Radio 4 a profile of the Chief Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court, Mr Luis Moreno-Ocampo, an Argentine citizen.

He has proposed that the Court should issue a warrant for the arrest of Omar el-Basheer, the President of Sudan, on a series of charges relating to the orders which he might have given to his marauding troops and irregulars in the Darfour.

One of the persons giving her impression of Mr Moreno informed us that he had a fixation with African international criminals, but that he had more or less dismissed any question of pursuing such far worse criminals such as Mr Bush and Mr Blair.   If one counts bodies, a gruesome necessity sometimes, it seems odd that this man should wish to punish Mr al-Basheer but was quite happy that those who had definitely ordered greater carnage should not be pursued.

As we know, the criminal justice system in the USA is so primitive that the result of any trial tends to depend more on how good a lawyer the Defendant can hire than on any matter of objective proof, but we also know that the USA, like the Sudan and many other judicially backward countries, do not recognise the International Criminal Court.   Also, the USA refuse to give any backing to the civil International Court which some four years ago declared the Zionist "wall of shame" totally illegal, and the USA thereby protect the Zionist entity from the international sanctions which could normally be expected.

However, although the USA refuse to have any contact with the International Criminal Court which might be considered to be a form of recognition, it appears from what others said during the same programme that Mr Moreno was appointed as being the least offensive candidate for the post to the Bush administration.   If the USA pay no attention to decisions of the I.C.C. any simple person must ask "why do the USA have any say in the matter of appointing one of its most important officers?"   This question remains unanswered but the failure of Mr Moreno to ask for similar arrest warrants against Mr Bush and Mr Blair for their crimes in Iraq and elsewhere leave him open to strong accusations of cowardice, or perhaps even (dare we say it?) corruption.   I propose to put the question to him and will inform everyone of any answer received.
