Soldiers Treated Shabbily
By James Broadway
Oct 22, 2003, 19:48

Dear Editor,

In response to the article about wounded and ill soldiers being held in squalor . It comes as no surprise, especially to Gulf War I veterans, whose treatment was no better than that being given to these reserve soldiers. Indeed, the military seems not to take care of its own very well under any recent administration.

I am a somewhat highly decorated veteran of foreign wars, and yet I am not allowed on the local base to visit the commissary or to stay in touch with my comrades.

I am like the Army fellow who so loved the Army and the American way of life.... I was told when I broke my leg in Twenty-Nine Palms that it was all in my head by the medical officer on duty (the equivilant of a major in the Marines).

When my fellow Marines heard my leg snap they knew it was broken...I knew it was broken. No x-rays were ordered...no cast was put on my leg. I ended up walking on it and it still bothers me 12 years later.

My wisdom teeth gave me problems since I enlisted and I pleaded to Base Dental every chance I got to remove them...I would be in the chair and yet they could not see to it to perform their duty...wish I had their names!

Sometimes nothing they do makes sense. They administered malaria pills to those of us sent to the scorching deserts of Saudia Arabia. Didn't seem to matter that alaria is commonly found it the more, shall I say -- damp regions of the world...

I know a WWII veteran...nicest old man you would ever hope to meet...until he starts talking about how he is in his late 70's and due to war time injurys he is having to visit the local VA Hospital...not naming any in particular but it starts with Big Springs Vetrans Hospital located in Big Springs Texas. And he gets hassled throughout the whole process in order to see a doctor. Sometimes he never gets seen by a doctor. He is one living reason why we are a free country today. How the hell can we treat him and others just like him this way? How? The old man's name is Joe Holten. He lives in San Angelo Texas, and he is my hero.

Mr. Blough --

I really do like your web site and have referred several of my politically like-minded friends and acquaintances to it. It is perhaps the most thoughtful and dignified and accurate political-commentary web site on the Internet. Reflects the age -- and ability -- of the editor quite well.

Thanks, again. And again, your web site is outstanding.

I am writing about the article by Sheila Samples:
Honey, I Shrunk the Presidency

http://www.axisoflogic.com/artman/publish/article_2587.shtml

In it, Sheila writes: "Their IQs ranged from 182 (Bill Clinton) to 99 (George H.W. Bush). ", and, "Bush hit the ground at a dead run, middle finger erect -- his 91 IQ hitting on all one cylinder. "

These IQ numbers are fake. They are part of an internet urban legend. See here:

http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/hoaxes/presiq.htm

Sheila's article has been reprinted over at democratic undergreound.com, but they removed the references to the phony IQ numbers:

Thanks,

John

Are the presidential IQ's in Sheila Sample's article on the shrinking presidency true?

What is the source for them?

Shocking!

Dear Axis:

I enjoyed Sheila Samples' article on the shrinking presidency very much. I occurs to me that, in just about all previous presidencies except Nixon, we've all seen the old shibboleth about "the man growing in the office" to be largely true. And at least that swine didn't shrivel.

Anyway, I'm interested to know where Sheila got the IQ data. At least Bush the Elder squeaked past average. Is Dubya our first president with below-average intelligence. It seems obvious.

Thanks,

Dear Axis of Logic

I put together an every-other-day "op-ed" page from various sources that I e-mail to several dozen like-minded moderate Democrats around the country. The articles are from The Green-Dog Democrat (a cross between a Yellow-Dog Democrat and a Blue-Dog Democrat) in the message, although my name does appear as the originator. Occasionally I will send along something that I have written instead of what I consider to be considerably better-written articles and commentaries that I have researched from the print and Intenet media.

Following is one of my poor efforts, which you may use under the heading of Political Satire, should you find that it meets your standards. I do not know the source of the "campaign patch," which was forwarded to me by my wife from her workplace during the summer. She is not aware of from where she received it. But it and the "article" do combine for rather subtle -- from straight delivery to the ridiculous -- dark humor at the expense of the public figures whose names appear in the article. The article can run without the patch if the editor's note at the bottom is deleted, although it does tie in with the article and provide a stinger at the end. If you use the article and you require an originator, you can use either Joseph Burgess or The Green-Dog Democrat, whichever you feel is more appropriate, although I would prefer that you use The Green-Dog Democrat.

Thanks.

Dear Axis of Logic:

Regarding the use of articles from La Voz de Aztlan ...

Jeesh, they publish, "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, " and attack lesbianism on their website.
