Portugal and Venezuela Sign 14 Agreements

After holding a private meeting, the Portuguese Prime Minister José Sócrates and President Hugo Chávez signed agreements in the Presidential Miraflores Palace, in Caracas.

The first document was a memorandum of understanding to specify technical details for modalities of payment and compensation for energy interchanging in exchange for goods and services. The agreement was signed by the Venezuelan Minister of Popular Power for Energy and Oil, Rafael Ramírez, and the Minister of Economy and Innovation of Portugal, Manuel Pinho.

Furthermore, the Venezuelan sate-owned company PDVSA, represented by Eulogio del Pino, and Portugal’s PETROGAL, represented by Manuel Ferreira Oliveira, signed an Oil Supply Contract.

PDVSA and PETROGAL also signed an agreement to study Block 6 of the Orinoco Oil Belt.

Two agreements to interchange oil for foods were signed between Bariven company, subsidiary of PDVSA, and Portugal’s Cerealis and Sovena. These agreements will allow Venezuela to receive 5,000 tons of powdered milk, 21,000 tons of pasta and other 21 tons of soy oil.

Furthermore, it was signed a complementary agreement to develop tourism in both countries, and other related to diplomatic affairs.

Portugal and Venezuela also signed an agreement to repair ships of the Venezuelan company PDV Marina by Portugal’s Lisnave.

It was also signed a macro agreement between PDVSA and GALP Energy to constitute a transportation and natural gas joint venture. 4,8 millions of tons will be transported.

Finally, it the energetic field it was signed a memorandum of understanding between PDVSA and GALP Energy to develop a pilot plan of wind energy in La Guajira (Zulia state, Northeast), Chacopata (state of Sucre’s coast, Northeast) and Nueva Esparta (Northeast).

Finally, President Chávez and Sócrates signed a Complementary Agreement aimed at re-launching and strengthening of bilateral relations between both countries.

Oil Shipment to Portugal

Venezuela will ship to Portugal 30,000 oil barrels by the end of the year, as part of the agreements signed between both leaders, said President Chávez.

The Venezuelan President pointed out the agreement will start with the shipment of 10,000 barrels per day to the Portuguese refinery Sines, locates 150 kilometres away from Lisbon.

President Chávez said 30,000 oil barrels represent annually about 1,000 million dollars, and pointed out he expects Portugal to pay the amount with goods, services and technology in food and medicine field.

The Venezuelan leader said those agreements complement alliances that are beginning to be developed with the European nation, similar to the agreements Venezuela already has with Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, where there is an important use of oil fields in the Orinoco Oil Belt.

“It is one of the biggest reserves of the world and our participation is specifically in one determined area agreed with PDVSA to develop later a project for its commercial exploitation and improvement,” said Maniel Ferreira de Oliveira.
