Letters from France
Greetings from France to the people of the USA

We must all send our best wishes to the people of the USA as they yearn to celebrate the coming departure of King George W in a few months' time.

However, they are unlikely to break through into freedom, since both the principal candidates to succeed him have promised to continue, in slightly differing forms, some of the worst features of his misrule.

Even though they cannot yet celebrate genuine independence from tyranny, it would be churlish to deprive the people of the USA (or of its colonies) of any hope of such a break-through at some date in the future, however far off that may seem.

I therefore wish them all, with the specific exception of their rulers, to be able to enjoy a happy day on 4th July 2008.
