Letters from France
Open Letter to Tzipi Livni, Ehud Olmert and Ehud Barak

Madam, Sirs,

Before entering into the substance of this letter, I feel it appropriate to introduce myself.   I am an elderly lawyer, having practised international law at the highest level and criminal law (among other disciplines) at all levels in two very different judicial systems, firstly in my country of birth in England and more recently in France, of which I became a national over thirty years ago.   I am also a practising committed Catholic Christian, with many very dear friends who are Jewish, Muslim, members of other Christian bodies or of other faiths or none.

During the Second World War, I was absolutely horrified by the atrocities committed by the Nazis and their collaborators against various groups of persons, including those whom they classified as 'Jews'.   As we know, they had swallowed the ridiculous theory of Wilhelm Marr, later adopted by such people as Theodor Herzl, Adolf Hitler, David Gruen (who changed his surname to Ben Gurion) and Goldie Myerson (née Mabovich, who changed her name to Golda Meir), that there was a 'Jewish race'.   All of you are, so far as I am aware, Ashkenazim, namely descendants of Caucasian tribes which had adopted Judaism some twelve centuries ago and later spread out through the Russian Empire and then further westwards into the rest of Europe.   However, like all other followers of Judaism, as well as of Christianity and Islam, your ancestors were clearly among the spiritual heirs of Abraham, whom we all revere, although they were in no way descended from the original twelve tribes of whom we read in the Tanakh.

My background and upbringing have made me willing to fight all forms of racism, which word I use in this letter in its widest meaning as any form of ethnic discrimination.   This made me unwaveringly hostile to the Nazi racist policies and the vile actions which flowed logically from them.   There can be no superior race of human beings, nor can there be Untermenschen.   However much we may hesitate, we all, and this includes you and your like and me also, have to acknowledge that every man or woman is our equal, and here I recommend to you the principles contained in our national devise, namely Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité as indicating the route which you should follow in your dealings with the people of the lands which your régime has invaded and occupied, whether in that which is, for all the spiritual children of Abraham, the Holy Land or in the occupied parts of Syria and the Lebanon.

Your legislature, the Knesset has passed the obviously racist Laws of the Aliya and you should abolish such indecent legislation as a matter of urgency.   Also, it is a joke in extremely bad taste for your spokespersons to call on Iran to comply with United Nations Resolutions when we all know that your régime has for so many years refused to comply with those which directly concern it.   You should therefore ensure that your own régime immediately complies with every single United Nations Resolution before calling upon any government, such as that of Iran, to effect similar compliance.

Furthermore, your threats against Iran are claimed to have a connection with nuclear research and the potential development of weapons.   However, unlike Iran, your régime has not submitted its facilities to international checks and control, despite its own well known production of nuclear weapons at its site at Dimona, with help from several 'western' countries, including mine.

To sum up, I ask you to put an end to your racist régime and turn the Holy Land, which you have taken over since the Second World War into a true democracy where all entitled to live there have equal rights regardless of their race or of their religion or lack of one.   If you were to do this, you would become genuine peace-makers, but, of course, it would mean ending the dream of establishing a 'master race' on lands from which the original inhabitants have been expelled.

Yours most sincerely,

Robert Thompson
