Nicolas Maduro was elected president of Venezuela yesterday. It was the 18th election victory in 14 years for Chavismo. However, the vote was much closer than we expected with Maduro winning by only 235,000 votes or 1.6%. The votes from Venezuelans living abroad are not included in these numbers and most of those votes will probably go to Radonski. In the last election there were 114,000 votes from expatriots. Therefore the difference could be even smaller. Radonski is now demanding that the boxes of paper ballots be opened and counted which will be done. Nevertheless, we won. The US-backed opposition will not have another opportunity to gain control until 2019 - or 3 years from now when they could, by the constitution, mount a referendum to oust Maduro. In statements made to the Bolivarian System of Communication and Information (SIBCI), Lucena also indicated that 100% of the operators of the voting machines where their posts as of 5:30 this morning. Regarding the members of the voting tables, the head of the CNE called on the members of tables in the states of Aragua, Delta Amacuro, Vargas and the Capital District to go to their corresponding voting centers and carry out their obligatory electoral service. “We call on voters to go out to vote with total calm, because the Electoral Center guarantees the right to vote,” she said. At the start of election day, as Venezuelans went to the polls to choose a new president for the next six years, international accompaniers ratified security and efficiency of the country’s electoral system. After a meeting yesterday between the international accompaniers and acting president Nicolas Maduro at the Miraflores Presidential Palace, former president of Guatemala Alvaro Colom said: “it appears to me the [electoral] system is facing. It is a system that at any point if there is a problem with any machine, accounting can be done manually.” Participating in today’s elections are 3,435 national electoral observers, 170 international accompaniers, 40 accompaniers from the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), 30 from the Inter-American Union of Electoral Organizations (UNIORE), and 40 accompaniers from different political parties. For his part, the ex-president of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernandez, said that on the eve of the elections, he perceived “an environment of happiness, a warm environment that heralds massive participation among the Venezuela electorate at the polls tomorrow.” “We are here as accompaniers in this electoral process in order to be able to bear witness to the legitimacy of the process,” he said. The president of Venezuela’s Electoral Council, (CNE), Tibisay Lucena, reiterated Saturday that the electoral results transmitted after today’s presidential elections will be an accurate reflection of the will of the people. Lucena called on political actors to recognize the results because “to recognize them is to respect the decision of all Venezuelans.” She added: “those who have never contributed to democracy and attempt to threaten it today are ignorant and condemned to be an absurd minority that belongs to the past.” She asked political parties to convey messages that are in keeping with the environment of peace that prevails throughout the country. “It’s very important that we act responsibly and not interfere in any way with the spirit or the proper unfolding of the process.” She said that this election, which was organized in just 37 days, draws on the experience of CNE workers, the members of electoral tables, and state officials. She thanked them for their efforts and “the tasks they have assumed and that reveal their commitment to democracy.” Meanwhile, she called on Venezuelans to vote peacefully. “Tomorrow Venezuela will once again show that it is a true democracy. "Es muy importante que actuemos responsablemente para que no exista alteración alguna de ánimos, ni lesión al buen desenvolvimiento del proceso". Destacó que esta elección, organizada en 37 días, se realizó sobre la base en la experiencia de los trabajadores del CNE, de los miembros de mesa y de funcionarios de Estado. Voting in the Venezuelan presidential elections has begun in the United States. At 6 a.m. local time, voting tables opened at electoral centers in Boston, Chicago, Houston, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, San Juan (Puerto Rico), and Washington DC. Voting will continue until 6 p.m. or until there are no more voters waiting in line to cast ballots. As announced by National Electoral Council President Tibisay Lucena at the official kickoff of the election, there are 18,903,143 Venezuelans registered to vote, of which 100,195 will exercise their right to vote in the country’s embassies and consulates in 88 countries around the world. Countries with the greatest number of Venezuelan residents are the United States, Spain, Colombia, and Canada. There are 90 voting tables open the United States, which has a total of 33,681 voters. The consulates with the largest number of voters are New Orleans, with 20,182; Houston, with 6,030: and New York with 3,446. Meanwhile, there are 2,189 voters expected at the consular section of the embassy in Washington DC, 1,720 in San Francisco, 1,600 Chicago, 1,333 in Boston, and 1,181 in Puerto Rico. All electoral tables in Venezuela are now functioning, according to an announcement made by Sandra Oblitas, rector of the National Electoral Council (CNE), a little after 10 a.m. She said the process has proceeded with normalcy and there have been no incidents to report. For her part, CNE President Tibisay Lucena called on the population to exercise their right to vote in peace, tranquility, and with full confidence that their votes will counted. Speaking on the program “José Vicente Hoy” on the private channel Televen, Lucena called on the country to stand firm and isolate those who are anti-democratic. “We give the results at the end of the day, we want to see a lot of participation. We call on those who are still in their houses to go out and vote in peace, tranquility, and with the confidence that their votes will be carefully counted,” she said. “I can say to the Venezuelan people that I have gone around Caracas, everything is very tranquil and calm, people are going to the electoral centers,” Molero said after casting his own ballot at the National Open University (UNA) in the San Bernardino neighborhood of Caracas. He said that he had been moving throughout the capital city since 3:00 this morning, and highlighted the tranquility which day is unfolding. “I receive information from the different commands, and so far it has not been any disturbance,” he said. The defense minister ratified the commitment of the National Bolivarian Armed Forces to the people, the nation, and the Constitution. “We are a guarantee of sovereignty, so that this process may develop without any kind of problem. We have been alert to any type of activity that might bring disorder so that we can act quickly and forcefully,” he said. La jornada electoral para las presidenciales venezolanas se inició en Estados Unidos. A las 6 de la mañana hora local abrieron las mesas repartidas en los centros electorales de Boston, Chicago, Houston, Nueva Orleans, Nueva York, San Francisco, San Juan de Puerto Rico y Washington D.C. La jornada electoral será hasta las 6 de la tarde, siempre y cuando no haya electores y electoras esperando en cola para sufragar. Tal como lo informara la presidenta del Poder Electoral, Tibisay Lucena, durante la convocatoria oficial a esta Elección Presidencial, el padrón electoral está compuesto por 18.903.143 venezolanos y venezolanas inscritos en el Registro Electoral, de los cuales 100.495 podrán ejercer su derecho al sufragio en las Embajadas y consulados del país, ubicados en 88 países del mundo. Los países con mayor número de venezolanos residentes en el exterior habilitados para votar son Estados Unidos, España, Colombia y Canadá. En Estados Unidos están habilitadas 90 mesas donde están inscritos 37.681 votantes. Los Consulados con mayor número de votantes son Nueva Orleans con 20.182, Houston con 6.030 y Nueva York con 3.446. Venezolanos residentes en el Sur de Estados Unidos iniciaron proceso de votación Este centro electoral que representa el más grande dentro y fuera de Venezuela por tener el 20% del registro electoral en el exterior y 26 mesas de votación en donde están registrados 20.182 electores y electoras, recibe desde horas de la madrugada a los venezolanos y venezolanas residentes de los estados Florida, Georgia, Carolina del Sur, Carolina del Norte, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri y Luisiana. Todas las mesas electorales del país están en funcionamiento, informó poco después de las 10 AM la rectora principal del Consejo Nacional Electoral (CNE) Sandra Oblitas. Asimismo, ratificó que el proceso ha transcurrido con normalidad y no hay mayores incidencias que reportar. Por su parte, la presidente del CNE, rectora Tibisay Lucena, llamó a la población a ejercer su derecho al sufragio con paz, tranquilidad y confianza de que los votos emitidos "van a ser estrictamente contados". En el programa televisivo José Vicente Hoy, de la televisora privada Televen, Lucena llamó al país a pararse con firmeza y aislar a los antidemocráticos. "La contundencia de la voz de los venezolanos a través del voto es muy grande y clara. Los actores políticos deben apegarse a esa voz de los electores y electoras que dicen: 'queremos resolver nuestras diferencias en paz y tranquilidad", señaló la rectora del CNE. "Cuando demos los resultados, al final de la jornada, queremos que haya mucha participación. Hacemos un llamado a las personas que aún están en sus casas a que salgan a votar en paz, tranquilidad y confianza de que los votos emitidos van a ser estrictamente contados", dijo Lucena. "Puedo decirle al pueblo venezolano que he dado un recorrido por Caracas, todo está muy tranquilo y con calma, la gente está acudiendo a los centros electorales", dijo Molero luego de haber ejercido su derecho al voto en la Universidad Nacional Abierta (UNA), ubicada en la parroquia San Bernardino, en Caracas. Comentó que está haciendo un recorrido desde las 3:00 de la mañana y resaltó la tranquilidad con que se desarrolla la jornada. "Recibo información de los distintos comandos y hasta ahora no ha habido ninguna alteración". En cuanto a las fronteras del país no ha habido ningún problema. "La gente está con buen comportamiento y nosotros trabajando para garantizar la tranquilidad". El Ministro de la Defensa ratificó el compromiso de la Fuerza Armada Nacional Bolivariana con el pueblo, la patria y la Constitución. "Somos garantes de la soberanía, de que este proceso se desarrolle sin ningún tipo de problemas. Hemos estado pendientes de cualquier tipo de actividad que pueda traer desordenes para actuar enérgica y prontamente", indicó.
