In the Heart of the USA: Opening up Horizons on
Democracy and Elections in Cuba

In the following video, Arnold August, author of Cuba and Its Neighbors: Democracy in Motion, talks with a delegation of 4 students from Emory University and the City University of New York (CUNY) during an October 22, 2013 conference at the two universities. Carol Delgado, Head of the Venezuelan Consulate in New York, joined the group to discuss social and political conditions as they exist today in Cuba and Venezuela, comparing participatory democracy in these countries with representative democracy and the two-party system in the United States.

The New York conference was the beginning of an exciting tour currently being conducted by Arnold August and others through the US Heartland. Tour conferences are planned at the Venezuelan Consulate in Chicago, continuing on through Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin from February 3 to 6 and later in Minnesota from April 14 to 17. The tour brings the truth about Cuba and its neighboring countries into the light of day for people like the students in the video who have been steeped in related false propaganda by the US government/corporate media.

More details about August's new book and this eye-opening introduction to Latin America for people in the US are provided below the video. We encourage all Axis of Logic Readers to attend these meetings if possible and if you are able to attend, we would very much for you to write to us about your experience.

Cuba’s Neighbours Under Consideration:
United States, Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador

In this groundbreaking book, Arnold August explores Cuba’s unique form of democracy, presenting a detailed and balanced analysis of Cuba’s electoral process and the state’s functioning between elections. By comparing it with practices in the U.S., Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador, August shows that people’s participation in politics and society is not limited to a singular U.S.-centric understanding of democracy. For example, democracy as practised in the U.S. is largely non-participatory, static and fixed in time. Cuba, by contrast, is a laboratory where the process of democratization is continually in motion, an ongoing experiment to create new ways for people to participate. August argues forcefully for the need to develop mutual understanding of different political systems and, in doing so, to not be satisfied with either blanket condemnation or idealistic political illusions, both resulting from a refusal to analyze the actual inner workings of each process.
