On July 17, we ran a story picked up from BBC Newsworld [here] in which BBC reported that Russia had struck a deal with Cuba to reopen a Cold War era spy base on the island. BBC stated that it obtained its information from the Russian-based newspaper Kommersant. They also state that Reuters provided them verification of the story from a 'Russian security source'. Now, BBC is reporting that Russian president Vladimir Putin denies there is any such deal. They quote him as saying that Russia could "meet its defence needs without this component". So, either the original story was true, or it isn't. In any case, we are formally retracting the story from our end until BBC gets its shit together. - prh, Editor Axis of Logic |
