It used to take a railroad gang to dig up old rails, replace the trim (gravel) and sleepers (ties), and then lay down fresh tracks. It was the same in building a new railroad from scratch. If you could go back in time and show the video below to the poor Irish/black/Asian folk who built the railroads, it's a good bet they would be just a wee bit upset at all the work they did and all the brethren they lost to this dangerous work. - prh, ed.
