A Letter From Venezuela to the BBC

Greetings from the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela!

The headline you use on this piece is misleading.

It should read "Minority of Venezuelan Opposition to boycott December vote" and not "Leading opposition parties will boycott December vote".

The fact is that so far there are more than 4,800 candidates for 335 mayoral posts up and down the country.

82% of political parties operating at national level in Venezuela have postulated candidates. Most of these parties are opposition parties by a long way and at local level 84% of all political parties registered have postulated candidates.

All in all 95 political parties are active in the upcoming municipal elections of which at least 80 are from the opposition.

Surely in democratic terms this is more newsworthy as a celebration of democracy itself than lending your important headlines to highlight the elite minority of politicians and their parties in the country?

The BBC slogan is "fair, free and impartial" - perhaps you should ask your editors and reporters to act in this way and refrain from joining the chorus of criticism - both overt and implicit - against Venezuela.

In case the current generation of reporerbots you employ are not aware of the BBC's stance towards Venezuela, I suggest they read thiis analysis of BBC coverage of this country from 1998 - 2008. Of 304 pieces published only 3 had anything positive to say about the country.

This research was carried out by the UK's University of the West England. Here is the link.

I can see little or nothing has changed since 2008 as far as the BBC is concerned?

We are not building nuclear bombs or launching missiles so it would be nice to have some respect from you people once in a while.

Arturo Rosales.
