Has the killing of former Miss Venezuela, model, and actor, Monica Spear by the hands of seemingly random assailants sparked new political dynamics in Venezuela? Members of the Movement of Artists for Peace and Life urged the country to join efforts in actions against violence, announced Tuesday chairman of the group, Roberto Messuti. The group made the call after a meeting with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, on the occasion of the death of actress Monica Spear and her former husband, who were victims of a robbery gone wrong. “It’s the time to be united. Let’s see that this is the moment not to add fuel to the fire but to join efforts so that we may coexist,” Messuti said at Miraflores Presidential Palace, together with singers Rey Armas, Fabiana Ochoa, Francisco Mendoza; actors Roque Valero, Jessica Sosa, Dilia Guaicaran, Pedro Lander, Manuel Sosa, Jorge Reyes, Antonio Machuca; TV host Gabriel Novoa, and journalist Daniela Rivas. It’s crucial to work as a whole and support the National Government in the actions it has fostered so as to achieve cultural changes to leave behind violence and actions as that which occurred to Spear and her ex-husband, Messuti added. The group of artists also proposed giving a boost to the Movement for Peace and Life through visits to communities, shantytowns, barrios, sports facilities, theaters and squares, said the spokesperson, stressing the significance of healthy coexistence and changing idleness to productivity among the young.
Getting busy The group of artists have proposed to give to the population workshops on performance, make up and others raised in communities. Actor Antonio Machuca commented that arts are the mean to take to communities spaces to sensitivity and integration, already presents, but needed to be sustained. “We must act as a force, not only as individuals,” Machuca said to the media after the meeting with President Maduro. The important thing of this Movement shall be “helping in education, content, exchange of knowledge and to create multipliers,” he added. The Movement for Peace and Life is made up by social, community organizations, collectives and any group of people who desire to take part on it. It has also invited unions, businesspeople, teachers, artisans, peasants, students, artists, housewives, etc. President Maduro convened a plenary session next Thursday with members of the Movement to resume sports and cultural activities carried out since 2013.
