An Arab Israeli man has been convicted of “rape by deception” and sentenced to 18 months is prison after having consensual sex with a Jewish woman he had lied to.

Sabbar Kashur, a Muslim from East Jerusalem, told the woman that he too was Jewish.

The case has raised questions about institutionalized racism against the Arabs composing 20% of Israel’s population.

Gideon Levy, an Israeli columnist with Haaretz says, “I would like to raise only one question with the judge. What if this guy had been a Jew who pretended to be a Muslim and had sex with a Muslim woman?

“Would he have been convicted of rape? The answer is: of course not.”

A 2007 poll found that more than 50 per cent of Israeli Jews thought marrying an Arab was “ equal to national treason”
