With Saturday’s hat trick, the FC Barcelona star has scored 253 goals in La Liga.

FC Barcelona player Lionel Mess became the top scorer in Spanish football history when he scored a hat-trick against Sevilla Saturday.

The 27-year-old Argentine beat former Athletic Bilbao star Telmo Zarra's record of 251 goals established more than half a century ago, in Barcelona’s 5-1 victory.

Messi, who won the World Cup Golden Ball award for best player at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, has now scored 253 goals making him the top goalscorer to ever play in La Liga.

Barca made light work of defeating the Andalusians, with Messi proving every inch of his worth, in spite of a lacklustre season which has included a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Clasico.

Recent Uruguayan recruit Luis Suarez continued to underwhelm when he failed to find the net, while his Brazilian counterpart, Neymar, another star of the recent World Cup, scored after 48 minutes. Croatian Ivan Rakitic, one of the Blaugrana’s pick ups in the off season, scored in the 65th minute against his former team.

An own goal by Barcelona's Jordi Alba 47 minutes into the game offered small conciliation to Sevilla.

"Messi is without doubt the best player I've seen as a player and a coach," said Barcelona manager Luis Enrique after the game.

The record breaker is known for his humility and his lack of interest in money. His Argentina and Barca team mate, Javier Mascherano, once said of him, "Although he may not be human, it’s good that Messi still thinks he is."
