Stas Namin [born Anastas Alekseevich Mikoyan] was the first Soviet era performer to bring his act to the United States. He was also responsible for breaking the Soviet monopoly on the performing arts and ultimately became widely credited with launching the careers of many others.
I saw him perform in St Petersburg (then Leningrad) in 1986. Except for a few more years under his belt, this video shows not much difference in musicianship and dedication to entertaining his audience. - prh, ed.
English Lyrics:
Dancing clubs Jericho's pipes Media hassles Radio, TV Don't sweat it, honey They won't take us by force Enjoy your sweetheart And capture the high Bentley and Ferrari Became trivial toys They said on the radio That rose from our knees We don't want to hear That there are other forces Nothing is higher Than our Kremlin walls
Chorus: We will have fun Beyond their dreams We will have fun While they grieve! We will have fun And wine will pour Like blood...! Na zdorovye... Cheers!
Bombs and missiles Jingling coins Sanctions in response Pride of the whole country! Brother goes against brother Who would ever think We would be soldiers We should not cry! How little we need To gather the flock Devilish delight Gallows for dessert Hatred and anger Climbed out of a coffin And on the flag again Money and power!
Chorus
In a mask of compassion The world gives promises To give aid But remembers its own pocket Teams of politicians Turned on the propaganda You will not find the truth Everywhere there's deception Those, who lit the spark Are carried on people's arms And are submissively asked To put out the fire But from their highness Hiding their indifference They are ready again To torch the universe
