NYT: Turkey purges intellectuals
Anytime I see NYT spouting the need for democracy or human rights in foreign countries, as in this article, I wonder about their silence, their dearth of real investigative journalism on the undemocratic political machinery, the "corporate dictatorship" and many human rights violations and maltreatment of the underclass in the US. In other words, I see a hidden NYT agenda.
When I read this story with all the fawning over Professor Uzgel with tear jerking anecdotes and sympathy for Turkey's "intellectuals" I have to wonder how many of those academics were involved in Turkey's 2016 attempted coup to overthrow it's elected government.
I have always faulted Chávez for not sweeping the golpistas out of the house in Venezuela's military, political parties and prestigious universities, Central U, Bolivar U and Catholic U - all on the US payroll, "intellectual" hotbeds of coup mongering leading their students toward a violent overthrow of the government and deeply involved in the April 11, 2002 coup, Chávez thinking they would be grateful for his pardon, letting them avoid prison, keeping their jobs and walking. He thought they would join his attempt unify Venezuela by bringing them into a participatory democratic process to win or lose in free and transparent elections. He was naive.
Unlike Chávez, Erdogan recognized that this particular breed of leopard does not, did not, will not change its spots. We have our many problems here in our ongoing civil war with our traitors demanding that the elected government step down, beholden to the US and even inviting a military invasion largely because Chavez didn't "limpiaza la casa" in 2002. In any other country they would have been exiled, handed long prison sentences and in some countries disappeared or lined up against the wall.
How many of the "intellectuals" in Erdogan's purge were in involved in Turkey's 2016 attempted coup? Who can know? On the one hand, I have no doubt that he used it to also eliminate some honest political adversaries and grab more power. On the other, maybe preventing civil war and protecting democracy by cleaning the house includes a dirty reality, sweeping all the margins, the corners, under the cabinets, beds and sofas where some innocents unfortunately lose their jobs or worse.
An attempted coup is a declaration of war and wars cannot be fought democratically. Thinking otherwise is an oxymoron. It's an ugly but plain reality. All wars are ugly.
Please don't get me wrong, Erdogan is guilty of many real human rights violations, killing civilians and even war crimes, e.g. his illegal attacks and occupation in Syria. But we won't see the NYT accusing him of violating Syria's sovereignty, bombing the Syrian people including Kurds and their elected President Assad, NYT's hated enemy and Israel's gateway to overthrowing the governments of Iran and ultimately Russia. I think all that must be considered when reading NYT articles like this one.
Finally the timing. It's interesting that NYT publishes this on the heels of Erdogan's defiance as a NATO member, rejecting Washington's demands and threats with Turkey's purchase of Russia's S400 missile defence system, just another case of NYT carrying water for the CIA and Pentagon.
