Henrique Capriles Radonski |
I can’t get over my surprise. The outright nerve of the “eternal candidate” is without limits. Now he is “campaign manager” for the municipal elections for the Venezuelan opposition due to be held on December 8th. How can this be understood?
The upcoming municipal elections have certain antecedents for the opposition that are worth mentioning.
It was on February 12th 2012 when the opposition held its primary elections to select its candidates for mayors, state governors and its presidential candidate. So far the results obtained by the opposition speak for themselves and a year and a half later they have lost two presidential elections at the hands of the same candidate – a unique achievement globally speaking; they lost 20 out of 23 state governorship elections which shows that the candidates chosen in the primary process were “selected losers” and for this reason it will probably be the same in the municipal elections.
A year and a half after the primaries there are sectors of the opposition who are demanding fresh primary elections to select their mayoral candidates as there is a perception of yet another defeat on the cards based on the primary results. This is without mentioning the infighting and division in the opposition ranks sparked by the fear of having to face yet another defeat at the polls.
However, the most amazing thing even at this late date is that Capriles, the eternal candidate and two time loser in just six months and who continues in the street giving speeches as if the presidential elections had not taken place, has not yet recognized the results when he lost to President Maduro on April 14th. This is after a 100% audit that confirmed the results and witnessed by ambassadors, the general public, the party faithful and other groups from Venezuelan society such as sports people, TV personalities and actors.
After calling for violent street protests which caused 11 deaths (homicides) and over 100 injured, as well as protests against the National Electoral Council (CNE), he is still demanding “justice” (i.e. he won). On top of all this he demanded to be national campaign manager for the municipal election for the opposition and the Democratic Unity Table (MUD) approved this demand unanimously. (???)
The barefaced attitude of such a “refined” person from the upper echelons of Venezuelan society and the fateful direction, in which the Venezuelan opposition is heading, is the major advantage that the Revolution has at the moment. Capriles, with his “dog in a manger attitude” is not being the governor of Miranda state to which he was elected and is now campaign chief for elections organized by a state institution (CNE) which he has refused to recognize - as it has confirmed the election of a President he calls “illegitimate” but whose “illegitimacy” he has been unable to prove.
Capriles is lost in his labyrinth and is now the maximum expression of the right wing political despair in the country. Ambitious and selfish he is condemning the opposition to another electoral disaster despite any problems the ruling party may have, which are in any case nothing compared to the magnitude of the problems permanently experienced in the opposition ranks.
