Pentagon Denies "Mission Creep" As More Troops and Weaponry Are Sent To Iraq Printer friendly page Print This

In spite of blatant evidence to the contrary, the Pentagon maintains that its military involvement in Iraq will be limited to advisory positions only. Even as they speak, however, the Pentagon is pouring military equipment into Iraq at a dizzying pace, and US combat troops are on the ground ready to become entrenched in this shiny new Iraq war.

Although every few days we hear of another 300 or so troops being sent to Iraq, along with powerful weaponry and advanced surveillance drones, the Pentagon continues to use weasel words in order to insist that this is not a "mission creep". “There’s no mission creep. The missions haven’t changed,” Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby said in response to a reporter’s question at a press conference. “Some of the numbers have been added in the security-assistance realm … It’s very fluid, and the commander-in-chief and the military leadership here in the building, I think, expect and should have a certain measure of flexibility here in how we manage the resources available.”

Kirby went on to say he believes that President Barack Obama has authorized the deployment of enough troops for the military to protect American citizens and property, and advise the Iraqi security forces in their fight against ISIS/TIS. However, he was unwilling to rule out that more troops and weapons would not be sent to Iraq in the near or distant future.

Meanwhile, the Obama administration is ready to send 4,000 Hellfire Missiles to Iraq as soon as possible, a plan that has the fat cats at Lockheed Martin purring already. Sale of the laser-guiding missiles would be in addition to the 500 recently purchased in February, which the Iraqi military burned through by June. Currently, the Iraqi army has 2 outdated Cessna 208b prop planes to fly the missiles, but we can rest assured that that more modern aircraft will likely be ordered under the Special Defense Acquisition Fund, the purpose of which is to quickly buy war machines for distribution to "friendly" governments.
