Airstrikes Pound Mosul, Kirkuk Printer friendly page Print This

Iraqi airstrikes slammed into the northwestern city of Mosul on Sunday. While the Iraqi government and US officials claim no knowledge of the strikes, local residents are saying homes were destroyed and civilians were killed, and pro-Iraqi websites claim dozens of Sunni militants were killed in the offensive.

The strikes followed the first public appearance of Caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State, who was shown giving sermons in Mosul on Friday.

Also on Sunday, more citizens were injured and at least one child was killed as Iraqi fighter jets annihilated the center of Tuz Khurmatu, Kirkuk. Locals are saying the target was the offices of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). It is worth noting that the Kurdish Regional Government is nearing secession from Iraq, despite strong opposition from the Iraqi government and the Obama administration. In spite of that, there is a strong presence of Green Berets in nearby Irbil, courtesy of the United States.

Meanwhile, using weaponry captured from its takeover of Mosul last month, TIS has renewed its offensive in Syrian territory held by Kurdish forces, working its way to the city of Kobane. While no casualties have yet to be confirmed, shelling has forced villagers who were living west of the Euphrates river to run for their lives and seek shelter in Kobane. No matter which way you look at it, innocent people are being displaced and murdered from all sides. Such is the horror of war.

In addition to being bombed left and right, Syrian and Iraqi citizens are also suffering the effects of a drought created by the Turkish government, who recently cut off the flow of the Euphrates River. Since then, the water levels in Lake Assad has dropped by six meters, leaving millions without drinking water. The Tigris and Euphrates rivers rise in the Anti-Taurus region of Turkey before descending south through Syria and Iraq, giving Turkey effective control over the water resources of its southern neighbors. Although Western media is trying to claim it is TIS that has cut off the water supply, history tells a different story, as Turkey has been known for decades to shut off water to Syria and Iraq whenever it has a whim to do so.
