Social security for everyone is something that truly defines a leftwing government, said Rafael Correa.
President Rafael Correa (Allianza Pais - Country Alliance) said on Saturday that the next challenge for the government would be implementing a system of social security for the whole population.
During his weekly TV program, Correa asked, “What is characteristic of us, a leftwing government? Building better roads? No, that is characteristic of a good quality government, but it is something the right can do as well. The issue of social security truly defines us as leftwing.”
He added that such a system has to go beyond money, and guarantee well-being for everyone,reported Prensa Latina.
“In the perspective of the capitalist right, social security is only for a worker, as part of the market, but in our perspective, social security is also for housekeepers and people who have not been working in private industry, but who have been doing important work their whole life,” said Correa.
He also mentioned volunteer workers, transport workers and farmers, as categories that should benefit from such a system, funded by the state.
Correa also recalled that this was a promise made during his electoral campaign, “and [he and his government] will fulfill it.”
