The International Committee of the Red Cross was involved in the release. The transfer happened under the Special Humanitarian Agreement, which allows for the temporary cessation of hostilities.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) released two Colombian soldiers Tuesday whom they had captured in early November.

The news was confirmed by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), who added that the soldiers are in good health. They were checked by a small medical team from the Colombian Ministry of Defense and are set to meet their relatives soon.

The transfer of the soldiers happened under what is known as the Special Humanitarian Agreement, which allows for a temporary cessation of hostilities. As a result, the ICRC was able to enter the area in order to pick up the detainees.

teleSUR correspondent Milton Henao reported that the Colombian vice minister of defense was there to oversee the release.

The FARC noted on its website, “this humanitarian action” was “carried out by the guarantor countries of the peace process, Cuba and Norway, and the ICRC.”

The FARC leadership has also said it will release General Ruben Dario Alzate captured in mid-November. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos suspended the peace talks, which had been taking place with the FARC in Havana, after the general was detained. The FARC says that the general entered a war zone dressed as a civilian and was detained because the half-century conflict is ongoing, despite the peace talks, and at the government's insistence. The FARC proposes a bilateral cease-fire, but the Colombian government refuses, saying it will only agree to it once a final agreement on peace is reached.
