The Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Tuesday that his country is in a “real war” with Russia, during an interview with BBC.
"Can I be absolutely clear with you this is not a fight with Russian-backed separatists, this is a real war with Russia,” said the head of State.
According to the Ukrainian leader, the presence of two Russians who were caught last week fighting with the rebels would provide evidence of an imminent Russian invasion.
Kiev claims the soldiers were on active duty, while Moscow has denied the accusation, clarifying that both men were no longer employed by the state when they were caught.
Nevertheless, the Ukrainian president reassured his commitment to a diplomatic solution, despite admitting he does not trust Russian President Vladimir Putin. However he said his country was getting ready to fight the Russians.
The Russian government has repeatedly called on peace in Ukraine, but Kiev forces have also repeatedly violated the cease-fire by shelling targets in eastern Ukraine, including civilians.
“I believe they are preparing an offensive and I think we should be ready,” Poroshenko added.
Poroshenko's declarations come at a crucial moment when both Kiev and the rebel forces in the east of the country are trying to continue with the implementation of the Minsk Agreement. The next stage is the most delicate one, since it requires both parties to agree on political solutions to the issues that led to the outbreak of the conflict.
