People react and show support for Maduro in street outside Miraflores Palace Printer friendly page Print This

After the election defeat suffered by the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) and its allies in the December 6 parliamentary elections, President Maduro was returning to Miraflores Palace in the late afternoon of the following day in a small motorcade when he was met by thousands of people in the street, waiting outside the palace gates.

These were not opposition protesters demanding his resignation, as the corporate media would have loved to report and believe, but a spontaneous demonstration of support for the President and his policies which are facing the threat of a very rough ride from January 5 onward when the opposition takes its seats in the National Assembly with an absolute majority.

The supporters were well aware that the opposition will try to dismantle many of the social laws and policies approved over the last 16 years under chavismo as it has to serve its financiers (the banks and rich entrepreneurs) as well as the US that has spent billions of dollars over the years to unseat the Bolivarian Revolution.

However, the Revolution has not been unseated as the opposition only holds part of the reins of power and will have to face up to popular resistance by the millions of chavistas in the country that represented 43% of the vote on December 6 – about 6.17 million.

The following video is in Spanish but you do not need to be able to understand it to appreciate what is happening in this show of unconditional support for the President and the Revolution. At the beginning of the clip you can see the interaction between the soldiers (“the people in uniform”) and the people as there was on April 13 2002 when the Civic-Military Union combined to rescue Chávez after the coup and restore him to power.

This spirit is still alive in the people – opposition take note ...

Comments in the video include:
  • “Exert popular control over the institutions as something went wrong”
  • “Produce more in the country as we know that we can do this”
  • “I say that if the bourgeoisie has taken power in the National Assembly then people power has to be in the streets”.
  • “Keep advancing President Nicolás Maduro. Here are people supporting you and ready to join you in combat in the streets”.
  • “What are we going to do to set up socialism in the country? The first thing we have to do is what Chavez said we should do and which has not yet been done ... destroy the mayoralties and governorships and hand over power to the communes ... right now ... as well as to the autonomous workers’ councils ...”
  • “It’s not the institutions that make a revolution, it’s the people!”
  • “Look, look look ... don’t legislate badly. Look ... this is what you will provoke ...”
  • “The homeland is not negotiable. Careful, Ramos Allup, we won’t let traitors negotiate the homeland”
  • “The ministries should be handed over to be run by popular power”
Just as the oligarchy and their media acted with such arrogance during the 2002 coup and received the shock of their lives when millions took to the streets to protest as these traitors and lovers of the USA always underestimate the people, the same recipe is cooking in the barrios and popular areas as people wait to see what actions the new opposition majority will take in the National Assembly.

Remember – the promise was that the lines to buy products would end and that regulated food items would be available immediately after the election if the opposition won – which they did by a huge margin. And these promises attracted so many new votes ... now one week later ... the lines are still there nationwide, worse than ever ... so maybe the opposition should interpret this video as a “shot across the bows” of their movement if they attempt to dismantle the rights gained during 16 years of struggle under President Chávez.

For those readers who think that a “new government” has been elected in Venezuela as the corporate media would have you believe, think again. The Revolution needed a sharp jolt to reignite the fervor and commitment that characterized the Bolivarian Revolution for many years but which got sloppy and complacent instead of adopting Trotsky’s idea of “Permanent Revolution” as a bulwark against those who want to sell the country to the highest bidder.

Here is the video. Draw your own conclusions.
