US democracy at work in Venezuela Printer friendly page Print This

Here is the video of US VP Mike Pence calling President Maduro "illegitimate" and demanding "free and fair" elections under the auspices of Juan Guaidó, the current President of the National Assembly that has been in contempt of Supreme Court decisions since November 2016. Hence, all its decisions and voting are null and void. That includes the very "election" of Guaidó who received his "mandate" when there was not even a legal quorum (50% + 1) in the legislative chamber.

Here is VP Pence speaking from the gutter of imperialist ambition:

The call for a transitional government is based on the fact that the May 20 presidential elections were not "free and fair" when Maduro was re-elected with 67.7% of the votes cast.

Why not "free and fair" according to the opposition and their US and Lima Group backers? Because the main opposition parties did not participate and they told their supporters not to go to the polls. (This was promoted actively by the US to discredit the elections as it was obvious that Maduro would win).

Guaidó, Pence and others claim that these elections were "illegitimate" as they did not represent the main political parties or their voters due to the high abstention (46% of the electorate actually voted or some 9.2 million). Thus, Maduro is not really President as not enough people went to vote??!!??

To normal people not desperate for power and to control the world's biggest proven oil reserves, this argument is extremely spurious.

Let's assume that new "free and fair" elections are held and chavismo calls for abstention: Then 46% vote and the opposition candidate wins with about the same percentage as Maduro's victory last year. Does this mean that such a result is also invalid and that President Opposition is "illegitimate" as well?

OF COURSE NOT!

This whole charade is just a ploy to destabilize the country and thank goodness that the National Assembly is emasculated since, in the last week, they have passed an amnesty bill to release all "political prisoners" who are in fact mainly common killers and criminals - but support the opposition. And they appointed a special envoy to the OAS. Both of these prerogatives are the exclusive territory of the President of the Republic and these acts actually turn Guaidó into the "usurper" rather than Maduro.

As usual, social media is red hot with disinformation with alleged protests all over Caracas and pot banging everywhere. We must be blind and deaf as we have not heard nor seen any of this personally - nor have our friends.

At the time of writing (in the early morning of January 23) - a traditional day on the Venezuelan calendar when the last dictator Perez Jímenez was ousted in 1958 -  it is almost like a Sunday morning. Very quiet and we will have to see if it remains so, or if this is a calm before a potential storm.
